Pastor Tom arrived on the doorstep of Messiah in 1986 as a Luther Seminary student, intending to stay for one year as a Seminary Contextual Education student. He didn’t leave after the year was up, and 32 years later he became a co-pastor of the congregation, after serving as the Youth and Family minister here for 21 years.
Tom is a graduate of the TEEM (Theological Education for Emerging Ministries) Program of Luther Seminary and Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary. He has always had deep roots at Messiah, as his Dad was confirmed here in 1935, and his 108-year-old Grandmother was a member here! Tom and his family love Messiah, and he feels grateful and excited and humbled—and ready!—to serve this wonderfully Gospel-centered and wonderfully diverse congregation as a co-pastor.
A part of Tom’s heart resides in East Africa where he and his sister have visited three times to help with development work in Western Kenya. He is passionate about declaring that all people are God’s Beloved Children—and to be open to God’s Amazing Grace!
Rich is a lucky father of four and a grandfather of nine, which takes up the majority of his time. He and his wife have been members of St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Messiah's daughter congregation, for 50 years. Since retiring from teaching 14 years ago, Rich has been a part-time staff member at Messiah: "a blessing from God. I love it here."
